Southampton’s Race for Life - by Lydia, age 9

Written by Heather on 15 July 2008

On Sunday 13 July 10 thousand women gathered at Southampton Common to take part in Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life.  We arrived at 9 o clock and there were not many people there but it did not take long before there were crowds of women with lots of different reasons as to why they were taking part in this year’s event.  I found it very interesting reading the dedications on people’s backs!  Some of them made me feel very sad and others made me feel happy that people had survived cancer.  On my back it read ‘I Race for Life for Mummy and all other cancer suffers’.

Before the race everyone did a warm up routine with the Nivea men and aerobics ladies – it was really fun!

Mummy, Amma (Grandma) and I decided to start the race by power walking due to the number of women around us we then jogged and ran the rest of the way.  When Mummy and I jogged round the corner and saw the finishing line we decided to sprint towards and across it.  We were so pleased with ourselves as it was very hot and we felt we had completed it in a good time, although mummy did not have her watch so we are not sure of our time.

My Amma did exceptionally well as running is not her favourite hobby.

When we collected our medal and goodie bag we went and met Daddy and my brother George.  George said I had done really well.  We all then went off and celebrated with an ice-cream with two flakes, we felt we deserved it.

All I have to do now is collect my sponsor money from all the kind people who sponsored me.  I really enjoyed taking part and am looking forward to next year’s event and hope that the money raised will help beat cancer forever.
